Sir John is a leading industrialist with experience encompassing major industrial companies, private equity and venture capital, including listing companies on public markets on both sides of the Atlantic. Sir John was one of the leaders of McKinsey's international healthcare practice until 1983 when he was appointed as head of the UK Audit Commission. He brings 30+ years of international experience of investment, policy and management of healthcare-related businesses in the public and private sectors. Since 1992, he has chaired some of Britain's most successful businesses, including Tarmac, Whitbread, Kingfisher and Geest, reportedly creating more value than any other FTSE leader during his tenure, returning over 15% per annum, 6x the return from the FTSE100 over the same period. Sir John recently retired as the Senior Non-Executive Director of Invesco Inc and as Chairman of Johnson Matthey Plc. He was previously chairman of ECI Partners for 13 years during which the mid-market buyout specialist delivered exceptional results. He is a director of Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Inc and former director of Spacelabs Healthcare Inc..
Sir John is best known as the former Director General of the Confederation of British Industry and has held a number of voluntary appointments including Honorary Treasurer of the Cancer Research Campaign, a Trustee of the Nuffield Foundation and is currently chairing the Future Homes Commission in the UK. He is Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall and was knighted in 1992 for his public sector contributions.
